Our curriculum

At Lamphey Primary School we follow the National Curriculum of Wales through a bespoke vehicle that drives our thematic approach to learning and teaching. It is a comprehensive, thematic, creative curriculum that is mapped out to ensure progression in learning and is followed by children from Reception to Year 6.

The curriculum is mapped and planned with a clear process of learning in mind. It has specific learning intentions for every subject, ensuring that children receive a broad and balanced curriculum which equips them for the next stage in their learning as well as life in a modern and evolving Wales.

The curriculum ensures that all pupils understand and celebrate the distinctive quality of living and learning in Wales in the twenty-first century and are able identify their own sense of Welshness.

The school’s curriculum promotes and sustains a thirst for knowledge and understanding and also a love of learning. English and Mathematics are taught on a daily basis for approximately one hour each. With Literacy and Numeracy being taught through a cross-curricular approach linked to the theme currently being studied by the children. Other curriculum areas such as Welsh, Art, Science, Technology, Computing, History and Geography are taught through a thematic approach. PE and Religious Education are also taught at least once a week. All children experience Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) through a taught curriculum and through weekly planned ‘Circle Time’ sessions.

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure enriched learning but also to help teachers make all learning exciting, active and meaningful for children. The curriculum is mapped out by all teacher, leaders and senior management.

Foundation Phase  – Reception to Year 2

At Lamphey we offer an holistic approach to learning which is child centred and designed to encourage each individual to reach his/her full potential.

We aim to provide children with activities which will allow them to become confident and independent learners. We operate a topic based approach to teaching and learning, where children are provided with the opportunity to engage in relevant practical experiences in a stimulating learning environment.

Through careful planning we ensure children have access to a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum which provides them with the opportunity to develop their skills across the seven areas of learning. These are:

  • Personal, social, well-being and cultural diversity
  • Language literacy and communication
  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Creative development
  • Physical development
  • Welsh development

Key stage 2.  (Year 3 to Year 6)

KS2 pupils follow the National Curriculum, studying each of the following subject areas:
