Croeso I Dobarth Pedwar / Welcome to Year 4

Croeso i ddosbarth 4.

Class 4 offers a fun, focused classroom where children are enthusiastic to learn. Children are presented with a wide variety of opportunities to extend learning within, and outside of the classroom. A variety of teaching strategies are employed to engage pupils in their learning, and a good ‘sing-song’ always puts a smile on faces with songs linked to strategies or topics being studied. All children are encouraged to be positive and challenge themselves to achieve the best that they are capable of using a positive growth mindset.

Rich learning activities are planned for with the support of the children to apply a range of skills through curriculum subjects with an inherent focus in lessons on the skills of Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and Welsh.

Displays

Working walls for Literacy and Numeracy are displayed in the classroom and are updated on a weekly/fortnightly basis. There is a display which celebrates topic work covering a wide range of the subject skills curriculum as well as skills taken from the Literacy, Numeracy, Digital Competence Framework and Curriculum Cymreig.

Homework

Maths and Literacy homework is set on Mondays to then be completed and returned on the following Monday. The tasks that are sent home provide opportunities to consolidate the children’s learning within the school setting. As well as maths and Literacy children are given spellings to practise on a weekly basis.

Reading

The skill of regular reading is nurtured and encouraged within Class Four and it is expected that the children read at home on a regular basis in order to further develop their comprehension and confidence. Guided reading sessions occur within the classroom on a weekly basis.

Learning Logs

Termly, the children will be given an extended piece of homework relating to each term’s topic. For each learning log activity, children are expected to research a topic present their findings in a variety of formats showing application of the skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT.

P.E.

P.E. lessons are timetabled for a Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The children are required to have their P.E. kits in school for these days. Swimming takes place during the first half term of the Spring Term. As part of our Healthy schools children are encouraged to take part in some of the extra-curricular sporting clubs the school offers.
